HOW TO GET TO THE SUMMER SCHOOL AT SHREWSBURY

Shrewsbury School lies on the outskirts of the town of Shrewsbury, approximately 50 miles west of Birmingham, and 75 miles south of Manchester.

BY CAR
From the north
From Liverpool, Manchester and the North, we recommend travelling via Chester, Wrexham and Oswestry. Pick up the M53 and then the A55 heading for North Wales, and then take the A483 to Wrexham.
This becomes the A5 which serves as the Shrewsbury bypass. Stay on the A5 until after a short section of dual carriageway, you meet the A5112/A49 at a large roundabout with Esso service station and garden centre.
Now see The Final Approaches (below). From the M5 and South West Leave the M5 at junction 6 (Worcester North) and take the A449 to Kidderminster and then the A442 to Bridgnorth and Shrewsbury.
On the outskirts of Shrewsbury, take the A5 west (signposted Llangollen and North Wales) until you meet the A5112/A49 at a large roundabout with Esso service station and garden centre.

From the South and East
The M6 Toll has shortened journey times to Shrewsbury considerably, and offers the closest to guaranteed driving times to be found on Britain's roads. The toll for cars is currently £3.50, which we consider to be well worth it, where appropriate for your particular journey.
From London via the M1, M6 and all points to the East Take the M1 to junction 19, and then the M6 to junction 3a.
Join the M6 Toll and follow it to junction T8, the second junction after the toll booths.
Now follow directions From the M6 Toll (below). From London, the Thames Valley and Oxford via the M40 Take the M40 to the end and join the M42 heading north at junction 3a (signposted M42 The North, M1, M6, Birmingham Central, Solihull).
Pick up the M6 toll road and follow it to junction T8, the second junction after the toll booths. Now follow directions From the M6 Toll (immediately below). From the M6 Toll Take the A460 (signposted to Wolverhampton) which crosses the M6 at junction 11 and continue to meet the M54 at junction 1. Head for Telford - the M54 becomes the A5.
Stay on the A5 until you meet the A5112/A49 roundabout at a large roundabout with Esso service station and garden centre.

The Final Approaches
It is better to avoid the fiendish one way system in the centre of Shrewsbury. Instead, find your way to the roundabout at the junction of the A5 and A5112, to the south west of Shrewsbury.
Take the A5112 signposted to Shrewsbury. Continue past the retail park (Sainsbury's, McDonald's, etc. to your right) to the large Meole Brace roundabout (with traffic lights). Approach this in the left hand lane. Take the second exit (B4380, signposted Porthill and Copthorne, keeping in the left lane and forking left immediately after the roundabout.
You go up an incline which is in fact a bridge over the railway. At the next roundabout continue on the B4380 (second exit). The road heads down the hill and sweeps round to the right; just as the road rises up again, take the right hand turn into Kennedy Road.
The school is now on your left. Continue up the hill, and turn left at the tennis courts. At the end of the road turn right, and after 400 yards, you will find the large blue school gates on your left.
At the school
Continue through school grounds past bronze statue with chapel ahead slightly on the left, at which the road splits, take a right and pick up signs to BOARDING HOUSE on your right with parking adjacent.
BY TRAIN Shrewsbury is served by the new Virgin trains from London Euston (by changing at Birmingham New Street or Wolverhampton), as well as by a direct service from London Marylebone. There are also regular services from Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Oxford, Cardiff and Bristol.
Shrewsbury station is just the far side of the centre of the town from the school, and is approximately 20 minutes walk away - but the route is not easy to find for a novice, so a taxi is usually a better bet.
There are usually a good number of taxis on the station taxi rank.
